automatically added to the mailing list, and follow-ups begin. Tons of features
are included with this powerful script such as multiple mailing lists, multiple
autoresponders, personalized follow-up messages, ability to schedule one-time

1.3 Features
Below is a brief list of the features of the Autoresponder and Mailing List
Manager.
Mailing List Management- The
Autoresponder and Mailing List Manager allows very easy and powerful
management of your mailing lists. An extremely easy-to-use interface has
been created which allows you to add, edit, delete and view entries of your
mailing lists. You can easily search and browse all your mailing lists. The
script can support huge mailing lists (tested with 3,000,000 subscribers),
with no problem.
Managing List Entries- Managing mailing
lists with the Autoresponder and Mailing List Manager has been made very
easy. You can easily edit, delete or view entries in your mailing list by
the email address. You can easily search your entire mailing list for the
needed entry.
Subscribe Confirmation Message- If
necessary you can define a subscribe confirmation message for every mailing
list. By setting this, every time someone subscribes to the mailing list,
whether through the autoresponder or by using a subscribe HTML form, the
script will automatically send them a welcome message.
Email Duplication Check- Every time
someone subscribes to a mailing list, the script will first check to make
sure that email address is not already in the mailing list. If it is, the
script will not add the subscriber to the mailing list again.
Autoresponders- You can easily create
autoresponders, which may be attached to your mailing lists. Then, everytime
someone sends an email message to your autoresponder, the script will
automatically send an auto-reply, add the sender to the mailing list, and
begin the follow-ups on them.
Multiple Autoresponders- You can create
multiple autoresponders. Each autoresponder you create can be assigned to a
different mailing list.
Multiple Domain Names- You can create
autoresponders on multiple domain names. For example, you could create an
autoresponder at tom@mydomain.com, and another at,
prospects@myotherdomain.com.
Capture Both Name and Email Address-
When someone sends an email to an autoresponder, the script will capture
both, the sender's name and email address. This way, your follow-up messags
can be personalized with the subscriber's name.
Automatic Follow-Ups- This is the heart
of the Autoresponder and Mailing List Manager. You can define follow up
settings for every mailing list, which will send out the selected email
messages at different time intervals. For example, you could have follow-up
settings for a mailing list which will send out an email message three days
after a subscriber is added, then send out a second email message four days
later, and a third message two days after that.
Easy to Manage- The Autoresponder and
Mailing List Manager allows you to easily manage all follow-up settings for
all mailing lists. There is a nice, easy to use interface which makes
managing the follow-up settings much easier. You can easily add a follow-up
setting just by entering the number of days to wait, and typing in new
message.
Personalized email Messages- One of the
great features of the Autoresponder and Mailing List Manager is that the
follow-up messages can be personalized with the subscribers information.
One-Time Scheduled Mailings- You can
even schedule one-time mailings with the Autoresponder and Mailing List
Manager. This allows you to send an email to everyone in a selected mailing
list on a specifed date. All you have to do is specify a mailing list, date,
and type in the email message.

1.4 System Requirements
Only the most basic of web hosting
packages will not have the resources to run the Autoresponder and Mailing List
Manager. Please check with your host before ordering the software:
Apache web server running UNIX, Linux or Windows NT/2000/XP with your
own CGI-BIN. Installing on IIS server probaly required the some additional
support.
MySQL (at least 3.23)
Perl 5.005 (Active Perl on Win32 platforms) or greater and modules:
DBI and DBD::mysql
CGI
GD (required for diagrams)
FTP access for installing and configuring AMLM
Sendmail, Qmail, or SMTP
You don't need to have access to
.forward or .procmail file to collect subscribers by sending a blank email.
The AMLM can connect to any POP3 email account and check mail for new
subscribers. Not just your domain POP3 access, but also the free ones!
Mail Program Setting:
Sendmail path (eg, /usr/sbin/sendmail):___________________
Send through (eg, sendmail):______________________________
SMTP server (eg, localhost or mail.mydomain.com):______________________
1. CRON
1.1 Setting up CRON (Optional)
If you want to set up CRON you need to read this section.
If you prefer or if you do not understand this, you can set up an
activation link (Section 4).
Firstly you need to set up script through the CRON
(Note this step can be done
automatically by AMLM Pro during installation):
In the 'startercron' script in 'cron' folder in zip distribution, edit
the line below "put here absolute path to your broadcaster directory":
$yourdir='/home/username/public_html/cgi-bin/amlm';
Change it to your own directory path (refer to Section 0 above).
Secondly, you must log into your webhost's control panel and do this
(Note: this must be done manually):
For cPanel, click the Cron Jobs to edit CRON. Select Standard.
For some web hosts, click the FTP Manager and then CRONTAB to edit CRON.
If you do not know how to do this, ask your web host to do it for you.
1.2 Upload all files using FTP
Upload all the files contained in this archive (retaining the directory
structure) to the /cgi-bin/ directory on your server or hosting account.
Tip: I suggest you to create a new subdirectory in your /cgi-bin/
For example /cgi-bin/amlm/
All files should be uploaded in ASCII mode. If you are unfamiliar with
what this means please refer to your FTP client documentation. In most
cases this is all handled transparantly by your ftp client but if you
encounter problems later you should be sure the files were uploaded
correctly as described here.
If you do not want to use cron jobs to start broadcast you can remove your
'cron' directory from installation.
HINT: A good FTP client you can use is CUTEFTP (evaluation) or SMARTFTP (free).
2. FTP
Using your FTP client set the permissions of the following 16 files to CHMOD
'755'
broadcaster
sender
bounce.cgi
conf.cgi
func.cgi
logpng.cgi
pref.cgi
r.cgi
register.cgi
responder.cgi
rss.cgi
starter.cgi
update.cgi
xmlexport.cgi
xmlimport.cgi
install.cgi
Check that all the above files have attributes changed to "-rwxr-xr-x".
You do not have to do anything to the other files which will have permission
CHMOD '644', exept 'cnf.rd'.
While installing file 'cnf.rd' must be set to '666' permission after that you
can
change permission to '644'.
CHMOD '666' to the file 'broadcast.log' - script will write broadcaster logs
there if you will check option "Save broadcast logs" in the "Statistics" -
"Current broadcast log".
CHMOD 777 to directory 'backup' - script will write MYSQL backups there.
HINT: To change the file permissions, right click and select "change file
attributes" in your FTP client, enter the number into the Manual box.
3. INSTALL
Once all the files have been uploaded and permissions set you should
point your browser to the install.cgi file. For example if your domain
name is www.mydomain.com and you placed Autoresponder and Mailing List Manager
in a directory http://www.mydomain.com/cgi-bin/amlm/ you would enter:
http://www.mydomain.com/cgi-bin/amlm/install.cgi
into your browser. When you have done this you should see the Installation
screen appear.
Before proceeding with installation you should ensure you have a database
available. Most good hosting accounts now come with at least one database
as part of the basic package although it may need to be setup before first
use. Ask your provider for details if you are unsure whether you do or not.
Once you have reached the installation page you need to fill out several
fields. There are 4 steps.
--Step 1: To start installation please enter your registration key (license
code).
It will be in the email you received during registration at our site. The script
will not work properly if you use a wrong registration key or if you ask for a
refund (we will disable the script remotely). It will also not work properly
if you exceeded the number of domains and copies you purchased. Refer to the
website for details of the version you purchased.
--Step 2: Database connection
If you do not have or do not know the database server, database name,
database username, database password, please check with your hosting provider.
The database server is typically localhost but this is not universal! The
database prefix allows you to enter a few characters, short name, etc.
which all tables used by this installation will be prefixed with.
The default (swd_) will usually be fine. However if you have more than one
copy of Autoresponder and Mailing List Manager using the same database be sure
to
alter it or you will receive errors during installation.
NOTE: If you receiving error like: "Can not write to cnf.rd file: permission
denied",
please set '666' permissions to it.
HINT: Go to the cPanel of your web host, click MYSQL Databases to do the above
changes. You must (i) create a database, (ii) Create database user and Password
and
(iii) add the user to the database with ALL privileges.
--Step 3: Database installation.
The script will check existing tables on your database. If tables with same
prefix
exists, you can skip database installation.
If you are updating script from Lite or old version please look at update*.txt
file
for instructions.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
!ATTENTION: If you chose to install database all existing tables will !
!be dropped. !
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--Step 4: Password to access to administration page. You will need to choose
a password for the initial administration account. You will be able to change
it later.
Write down your password here for record purpose:________________________
The installation script will create and populate all the necessary tables.
=====================
AFTER INSTALLATION YOU CAN REMOVE install.cgi and update.cgi scripts from
server.
Please backup and change permissions to '644' to your 'cnf.rd' file.
=====================
4. ACTIVATION LINK
You can omit this step if you use
Cron.
Now you MUST set up the activation link.
You place a 1-pixel "image" on a well viewed web page, which activates
the script periodically. If there even one visitor a day it will work fine.
When activated, it checks the POP3 email accounts you specified and sees
if it needs to send a confirmation email to your contacts and adds them
to your mailing list.
You can even place the activation image on another domain. It will activate
the script everytime somebody visits that page. However, in my experience,
I suggest that you place it on the entry page to your site.
Alternative method is to set up script through the CRON:
See Section 1.1 above for steps.
5. SETTING UP
Now login to the admin area using the password you specified during
installation. To run the admin area, just point your browser to the
responder.cgi file
Like this: http://www.mydomain.com/cgi-bin/amlm/responder.cgi
After you logged in please go to "GLOBAL SETTINGS" and enter all required
information.

This is where you can backup and
restore your datebase.
It is recommended you perform this at
least once a fortnight.
Once you have completed the installation, you need to delete out install.cgi and
update.cgi from your server. Leaving it in place is a very serious potential
security issue.

What is RSS?
RSS is a Web content syndication format. Its name is an
acronym for Really Simple Syndication.
RSS is a dialect of XML. All RSS files must conform to the
XML 1.0 specification, as published on the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)
website.
AMLM used RSS 2.0 format to publish messages line.
What is personalized RSS?
Each prospect in AMLM account has own unique link to RSS
feed. If you will use special tag [RSS_LINK] it will be replaced by URL to
RSS feed.
If you set your message that must be published in RSS feed
short message description will be added to personalized RSS feed when
current message is sent to prospect.
RSS chanel settings
Required fields
Here's a list of the required channel elements, each with a brief description,
an example, and a pointer to a more complete description where available.
Title- The name of the channel. It's how people refer to
your service. If you have an HTML website that contains the same information
as your RSS file, the title of your channel should be the same as the title
of your website.
Link - The URL to the HTML website corresponding to the
channel.
Description - Phrase or sentence describing the channel.
Optional channel elements
Channel language - The language the channel is written in.
This allows aggregators to group all Italian language sites, for example, on
a single page. A list of allowable values for this element, as provided by
Netscape, is here. You may also use values defined by the W3C.
Copyright text - copyright notice for content in the
channel
Text input settings
A channel may optionally contain a textInput sub-element, which contains four
required sub-elements.
Title - The label of the Submit button in the text input
area.
Description - Explains the text input area.
Input script URL -- The URL of the CGI script that
processes text input requests.
Input script parameter name - The name of the text object
in the text input area.
The purpose of the textInput element is something of a
mystery. You can use it to specify a search engine box. Or to allow a reader to
provide feedback. Most aggregators ignore it.
Adding messages to RSS line
Not all messages will be published in RSS feed and web-based archive. This
option can be enabled for each message in your account. If RSS publishing
enabled you will see RSS icon near message in Edit messages area
To activate RSS publishing in message you need select checkbox
Save current message into personalized RSS-feed and set RSS-feed description
text below.
Publishing links to RSS and web archive
Finally you need to inform your prospect about links to RSS and web based
archive in your messages.
You just need to add text with special tags that will be replaced by links to
RSS feed and Web based archive. For example you can add following text in your
"Thank you for subscribing" message:
Hello [FIRSTNAME]!
Thank you for subscribing on demo account RSS!
------
You can find your web based messages archive at [HTML_LINK]
Your personal RSS feed: [RSS_LINK]
------
Why I need to use RSS?
If for some reason message was not delivered to
subscriber, he can always open copy of current message from web.
Many people use RSS Readers.
Link Tracker
Link Tracker allows you to create tags for link tracking purposes i.e.,
clicking of links in your email messages.
Here you define a tag like [LINK22] with its forwarding URL.
You then insert the tag into the body of your messages.

Bounced Emails
Sending options to collect bounced emails
At first you need make sure that bounced messages come back to your POP3
mailbox
If you can already receive bounce messages you can skip this step
Go to the Global settings -> Send Options If you are going to process bounced
messages you can define bounce sending options there.
SMTP sending
If you are using SMTP to send messages you will see the screen below.
If you are using SMTP system for sending your messages you can specify an
email address that's different from your 'From' or 'Reply-To' headers. You have
to check 'Use following email address as SMTP sender' checkbox and specify the
email address.
Setup using the Sendmail Command
Your results will be mixed with this method, but it's worth a shot:
Note: I advise you to use sendmail with -f flag because it is
most easy way to receive bounced messages
Technique 1: The -f flag.
You have to check 'Use sendmail -f flag' and specify email address there This
should set the Return-Path header.
Technique 2: Return-Path header. If that doesn't work, you can
try to set the Return-Path header explicitly. This is not the best idea,
however Qmail allows you to do this.
Technique 3: Errors-To header. The Errors-To header seems to have
been created just for this task, but it's actually a deprecated header, so
you should use it with caution. You have configure Sendmail to see the
Errors-To header. I don't recommend using this header, but if all other ways
fail you can specify Errors header.
Testing
To test out any of these configurations, send yourself a test message and
view the source of the message itself, in your mail reader. In the mail headers,
you should see the Return-Path header like:
Return-Path: yourbounceaddress@yourhost.com
Delivered-To: helpdesk@sellwide.net
Content-Disposition: inline
Content-Transfer-Encoding: binary
Content-Type: text/plain
MIME-Version: 1.0
X-Mailer: MIME::Lite 2.117 (F2.71)

hard bounces: count of hard bounced messages before prospects
will be removed or inactivated (Hard bounces are messages telling you
about permanent errors like host or user not found, spam reject, and it
means that your message will not be delivered to the recipient). By
default prospects will be removed/inactivated after 1 hard bounced
message, but you can change this option.
soft bounces: count of soft bounced messages before prospects
will be removed or inactivated (Soft bounces messages are about
transient temporary errors like user mailbox over quota, their server
down, etc ). By default prospects will be removed/inactivated after 3
soft bounced message, but you can change this rule.
Actions:
remove prospect from database: your prospect will be removed from
database
set status to inactive: your prospect will be inactivated
add prospect to BlackList emails database: you can set this option
to automatically add prospects to the BlackList when they are removed or
inactivated.

file
2. There you can "Download example tab-delimited file"
3. You can edit this file with MS Excel

tab-delimited file
How many Lead import custom fields can I use?
You can add so much custom fields as you want in Account -> HTML Form -> Custom
fields
How messages sequence works?
Probably to clarify all questions how to sequence works I have to explain in
what way script sends messages. Each prospect in the database has 2 fields –
Sequential message ID and Sequential message last sending date. Every time these
fields updated automatically.
So, you have 5 messages #1,#2,#3,#4,#5 which equal with sending dates.
Prospect registered at 05/01/2006.
First message will be sent in one day after registration. And then “Sequential
message ID” will be updated to 1 and date will be updated to 05/02/2006
Every time when broadcasting starts script tryes to calculate: "Do I need to
send next sequential message to prospect?". So if script will be executed next
day it will notice that next message to send is "#2" and it must be sent after 1
(2-1) day after sending message #1. So if prospect has received message #5 and
you will add message #7 all prospects that received message #5 more then 2 days
ago will receive message #7 after you will add it to sequence. If message #5 was
sent less then 2 days – message #7 will be sent after 2 days after sending
message #5.
But if you have messages #1,#5,#10,#20 and trying to add message with days 15
all prospects that received message #10 but not #20 will receive #15 but is they
are already received #20 they will not receive #20 because #15 sequence already
done.
AMLM did not send messages
There are few reasons why AMLM did not sending messages and you need follow
instructions to find it.
1. Try to send test message
1. If you've not revived your message you need to look at Send Options and and
ask your hosting provider about sending messages settings
2. You can try to send message from your server from other software to make sure
that problem happened bacause of the server
2. If test message was received correctly first you need to visit
Category:Statistics-> Current Broadcast Log
1. If your broadcast process was not executed long time you need to check your
broadcaster activator options: Web activator or CRON jobs activator.
1. Make sure that activator URL or CRON settings is OK.
2. Try to start broadcaster by opening URL http://yourhost.com/cgi-bin/AMLM/starter.cgi
(yourhost.com - your domain name and /cgi-bin/AMLM/ path to your AMLM directory)
How to send test message
To send test message from AMLM you should open Edit messages area in your
account and click "Test send" link near your message. If your message has
Multiple (text and HTML) format you will need to select format of test send
message on the next step.
What difference between sequence FINISHED and DISABLED status?
"Sequence Finished" means that in prospect profile will be saved information hat
last sequential message was already send.
"Sequence Disabled" means that any sequential messages will not be sent to
current subscriber.
Insert image in HTML
You can use 2 ways to insert images in HTML messages:
1) Internal image: You can attach image into message. If image filename is
foto.jpg you can insert HTML tag like
<IMG src="foto.jpg">
2) External image. You just need to publish image on your site and use URL for
image like
